Symbolism and Allegory Unit Reflection
Over the past few weeks we have gone over all different types of symbolism and allegory one of the things that we learned from in symbolism was “Through the Tunnel” I think that story had a lot of different symbolism because through out the story the reader experienced a lot of different things with the boy. For example when he went from the safe beach to the rocky beach we as the reader were able to experience the change from child to adolescent. In the “Animal Farm” we experienced allegory. We experienced allegory through the animals and through the reading, for example the animals meant something completely different. My favorite symbolism was “Through the Tunnel” because I felt like I could relate to it more and I felt like I got a better understanding of the story. Studying Symbolism and Allegory has change my thinking to the point were I start looking deeper into what I am reading and to try and figure out the real meaning of things.

San Pasqual Academy Dragons Symbolism

The mascot for San Pasqual Academy is a “Dragon”. To me a dragon represents strength. Also it represents the ability to bounce back from obstacles and gain respect. A dragon represent that we are fearless, and that we will put up a fight not only through sports but also through life. That is why being a San Pasqual Academy “Dragon” is the best thing in the world, because when you’re a “Dragon” you are resilient and nothing can hurt you but you’re self. That’s why I don’t understand why people don’t take the fact that they are “Dragons” and change the way they are. “Dragons” are not scared of anyone or anything. I feel that we has foster youth should take that and put it into our life. What I mean by that is we shouldn’t give up because we are going through obstacles; we need the mentality of a dragon through out life.

“Through the Tunnel” Foster Youth Initiation
Even though they don’t have to swim through a tunnel like Jerry in “Through the Tunnel” by Doris Lessing, foster youth are initiated into the foster care system once they are taken and placed into the system. Most people like me were really unprepared. Being taken away from my family was the most life changing experience both negative and positive. There are certain things that I when through first feeling helpless, and lonely. Second after feeling lonely, was feeling unaccepted and un-normal wanting nothing more but to feel normal. Third lost and that is when the anger comes feeling like your family does not want you. Feeling that no one wants you and the anger comes through the pain of feeling neglected. As a result of this initiation, good things can come from it. New relationships can form and you can begin to see you’re self differently, as a positive person who can accomplish anything. After people get past the wanting to be normal and get passed the feeling of neglect they have official been initiated and once they accept that, they can turn it around and change their ways.

"Through the Tunnel" Prompt A
In “Through the Tunnel” by Doris Lessing I do find it very convincing that Jerry took a risk and survives. I was scared because I was afraid that he might die. When he got is cut on his head I thought that it might be over. Also when his chest started hurting even though I was reading it, it felt so crazy because I thought that it was real, I felt like I was in the water with him. The fact the he survives was a complete twist to me, I really thought that we was a going to die and that no one would be able to find him. I thought that there wasn’t going to be an end to the tunnel. In “Through the Tunnel” it really showed that if you just believe your-self that you can do anything that you want, also that anything is possible.

House Symbol
The Lions symbolizes our house which is Girls 102. To most people, this item is just a picture of lions. To us, it represents family and order because in our house Bob and Debbie would be considered the Lion and Lioness also known as the leaders of the pack. We stick together just like in the wild we hunt together and protect one another from others. They guide us to make the right decisions just like the lion and lioness will have to do also Bob and Debbie will go to any extent to protect the girls in their house, just like the lion and lioness will for their cubs in the wild. Our house is the brightest, strongest, pack in the wild also known as San Pasqual Academy
